My day trip to Roatan - Honduras to hug a Sloth
I ventured on a 7 day Western Caribbean Cruise with Royal Caribbean. I honestly had never heard on Roatan or knew much about Honduras in General. Yes I had a look on google and youtube but actually being there
physically, I didn’t know what to exept. . . Well I was blown away!
One thing that stood out when I was pre-booking tours was the sloth and monkey venture with a snorkel tour for beginners thrown in. So I said sure we’ll go with that for the laugh.
As soon as we got there - our guide, a man with a smile so wide it could probably be seen from the cruise ship, introduced himself and took us on our merry way.
The island itself is gorgeous! I mean it had a beautiful mountainous terrain that drops into some of the bluest water you'll ever see. It’s like Mother Nature got bored and decided to make a landscape that was both a jungle
and a beach at the same time. It’s the only way to describe it.
Our first stop was the animal sanctuary. Loved it! At one stage we were put in with monkeys and one of them even sat himself on my head. After a while of admiring all of the animals, our guide promised me "a very special
friend." I assumed he meant a new friend in my tour group, but no. We were there to meet the sloths.
Now, I’ve seen plenty of pictures and videos of them online, but in person, they are just… slower. It's like they're living life on a 1.5x slow motion setting. And then came the moment of truth. I got to hold one.
There I am not petting the little fellow.
This beautiful, sleepy creature clung to me, its face a picture of pure, unbothered serenity. For a solid ten minutes (which, in sloth time, is probably about three weeks), I was his personal human tree.
I'm pretty sure I could feel my blood pressure drop just by being in his presence. I fell in love with him and was raging I didn’t bring a bigger bag so I could slip him in but we live and learn.
(Pro tip btw if you do decide to sneak a sloth back onto the cruise and then stick a mustache on him on the way home through security). Let me know how you get on haha.
So anyway, after I pried myself away from my new best friend, we headed to the beach for a snorkel tour. Now this part of the tour was also class!
The water was so clear, I could see the fish from the boat even before I had to scurry myself into the water.
Here I was thinking I would instantly take like a duck to water but I got the hang of it after a few gulps of water down my throat because I didn’t put my snorkel thingy on correctly.
If there was footage of this, it was like swimming through a live action version of "Finding Nemo," only I was a much less graceful Dory.
The guide, he was great. He pointed out different fish and coral formations, while I was busy trying to remember which end of the snorkel to breathe from.
After what felt like a few minutes of underwater acrobatics and dodging fish, we were back on the boat. My lungs were full of salt water, but my heart was full of memories!
